Long Term Sick And Facebook Beach Pictures

Nathalie Blanchard, who works at IBM in Quebec, posted Facebook pictures of herself while she was on long term sick leave. I don’t see anything wrong with this, do you? I mean who is to say you can’t be on the Internet when you are sick, or in her case when you are diagnosed with depression? Apparently the insurance company does who were writing monthly checks, because they now refuse to continue paying her. This is a clear violation of rules, right?
Well…the pictures weren’t Natalie hanging out with family or friends. In fact, she isn’t even in a house. They were photos of her on a beach in a bikini and even partying at Chippendales. Please tell me that institution isn’t still around? Does that change your thought process?
I’ve got several thoughts on this:
- How did the insurance company access these photos? Are there still people out there who don’t use Privacy settings? Was she friends with someone from the insurance company?
- Did Natalie really think posting beach photos was a good idea? I mean just being a bit smarter would have kept her out of this predicament.
- Is it possible the doctor felt going to the beach would help her depression? Sitting at home surely won’t help her fight it. The insurance agency should have been more sensitive to this. Of course this thought explains the beach but the Chippendale’s piece is still outstanding!
- Are insurance companies stalking long term care victims on social networking sites? I think its pretty clear they are so people better take privacy settings seriously + stop tweeting under your own name!
So what did we learn from all of this. First and foremost never post discriminating pictures of yourself on Facebook when you have security disabled. BTW…at the time of writing this Nathalie has applied security to her account as evidenced here. Good thinking Nathalie!!! BTW….this little picture is supposedly our long term sick girl:
